Donald Trump administration officials pressured the US agency responsible for producing banknotes to design a $250 bill with the portrait of the US president, the Washington Post reports, citing four current and former employees of the institution.
If the project is realized, it would be the first time in more than 150 years that a living person has appeared on a US banknote.
According to the newspaper, two officials appointed by the Trump administration to the Treasury Department — Brandon Beach and his adviser Mike Brown — have repeatedly asked the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to prepare test models of the new banknote.
The Washington Post reports that during August and September, Beach submitted several design variations, including a model where Donald Trump's portrait appeared in the center of the $250 bill, between the signatures of the president and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
British artist Ian Alexander, who claimed to have created the graphic design, told the newspaper that he had discussed the project directly with Trump. According to him, the US president had suggested adding the colors of the American flag and a logo for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
"He likes to call me his favorite British artist," said Alexander, who introduces himself as a portraitist of Queen Elizabeth II and other public figures.
The last time a living person appeared on American currency was in 1866, before a legal ban was imposed after using the image of a Treasury official on a 5-cent note.
Last year, a bill was introduced in Congress that would have allowed the issuance of a $250 bill featuring Trump's portrait as part of celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States, but the initiative did not advance.
A Treasury Department spokesman said the agency is “conducting the necessary planning and due diligence” regarding the proposed legislation.
"If this legislative initiative becomes law, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is taking proactive steps to produce a commemorative $250 bill that will appropriately honor our country's 250th anniversary," the statement said.
However, agency leaders have argued that there are significant legal and procedural obstacles. Former directors and monetary policy specialists point out that US law only allows the depiction of deceased people on banknotes.
