The funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is expected to be one of the most important political moments for Iran, while attention is focused on one key question: will his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who is considered the country's new supreme leader, attend the ceremony?
Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public since the US-Israeli attack, in which he was reportedly seriously injured and his father, mother and wife were killed. Since then, his communication with the public has been done only through written statements.
According to Iranian authorities, he has recovered and continues to carry out his duties, even leading Tehran's negotiations with Washington. However, his absence from public appearances has fueled speculation about his health.
If Mojtaba Khamenei attends the funeral and leads prayers for his father, it would be his first public appearance since the start of the conflict and an important signal for consolidating his position at the head of the Islamic Republic.
Conversely, an absence from the ceremony could add to questions about his condition and spark discussions about how the country is currently being run.
"This matter is not within our scope and the decision belongs entirely to the office of the (supreme) leader," said Ali Akbar Pourjamshidian, head of the authority responsible for organizing the funeral, avoiding any comment on Mojtaba Khamenei's participation.
Meanwhile, tensions in the region remain high. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned of an immediate response to any threat against the Iranian leadership.
"Tehran will give an immediate and strong response to any threat against its leadership," Araqchi said, after Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Khamenei was "marked for death."
It remains to be seen whether the funeral ceremony will serve as the first moment of Mojtaba Khamenei's public appearance or whether his absence will continue to fuel uncertainty about the political situation and direction of Iran.
