NASA has made an unusual statement on the eve of the 2026 World Cup, promising that if the United States is declared world champion in soccer, an official World Cup ball will be sent to the Moon.
The statement was made by NASA head Jared Isaacman during an event where plans for building a base on the moon were presented. He presented this idea as a symbolic challenge for the American national team, emphasizing that success on the field could be accompanied by a historic achievement in space.
“It’s a team challenge: you do your part on the field, we do ours in space,” Isaacman told the participants.
The idea comes as the 2026 World Cup is being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico. NASA has reportedly previously sent a soccer ball to the International Space Station, and the new plan goes a step further, targeting the Moon itself.
This gesture also connects to a historic moment in 1971, when astronaut Alan Shepard made a symbolic golf shot on the Moon, creating one of the most iconic scenes of American space exploration.
Essentially, NASA's initiative is seen as a combination of sporting motivation and space ambition, combining the excitement of the World Cup with future US projects to return to the Moon.
