US, Iran reach draft 60-day ceasefire deal, nuclear talks

The United States and Iran have reached a preliminary agreement on a 60-day memorandum of understanding aimed at extending the ceasefire and launching negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program.

However, US President Donald Trump has not yet given final approval, Axios reported, citing two US officials and a regional source involved in the mediation.

According to US media, the signing of the memorandum would constitute the most significant diplomatic development since the beginning of the conflict. However, a final agreement that would meet the Trump administration's demands on the nuclear issue would require further intensive negotiations.

US officials said most of the terms of the deal had been agreed upon by Tuesday, but both sides were still awaiting approval from the highest political levels.

According to Axios, the Iranian side later informed the mediators that it had secured the necessary authorizations and was ready to sign, although Tehran has not publicly confirmed this information.

US negotiators presented the details of the deal to Trump, but he did not immediately give his approval. "The president told the negotiators he wants a few days to review it," a US official said.

Axios notes that Trump and his advisers believed earlier in the conflict that a deal was close to being finalized, but previous efforts fell short.

The memorandum also stipulates that navigation in the Strait of Hormuz will be “unrestricted.” According to US officials, this means no tariffs or interference with commercial vessels, while Iran will have to remove all naval mines from the strait within 30 days.

Likewise, the American naval blockade is expected to be lifted in parallel with the resumption of commercial maritime transport.

The document will also include Iran's commitment not to pursue the development of nuclear weapons. The first issues to be discussed during the 60-day period relate to the management of Iran's enriched uranium and the future of the Iranian enrichment program.

In turn, the US will commit to discussing sanctions relief and the unblocking of frozen Iranian funds as part of the negotiations. The memorandum also includes discussions on a mechanism that would help Iran resume receiving goods and humanitarian aid.
