German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a phone call on Thursday to solve the country's corruption problems, as Kiev grapples with the fallout from a massive bribery scandal.
" The Chancellor emphasized the German government's expectations that Ukraine will make strong progress in the fight against corruption and continue reforms, especially in the area of the rule of law," the Chancellor's spokesman said.
The government in Kiev has been rocked by a corruption scandal this week involving allegations of bribes at a state-owned nuclear power company totaling about $100 million. Zelensky was not directly involved, but the scandal affects his inner circle and has led to the resignation of two ministers.
German government officials worry that news of corruption in Ukraine will undermine public support for the conflict-ridden country. Merz has tried to strongly support Ukraine at a time when many European officials see the Trump administration as wavering on U.S. military support.
Germany has given Ukraine more weapons aid than any other European country.
"Zelensky promised full transparency, long-term support for independent anti-corruption authorities and further rapid measures to regain the trust of the Ukrainian people, European partners and international donors ," Merz's spokesman said.
