Former Finance Minister Arben Malaj commented on the recent protests demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. According to Malaj, the decision to stay or leave is up to the Prime Minister, but he assessed that any insistence on continuing in office is bringing governance closer to an increasingly authoritarian model.
"Whether Rama leaves or not, that is up to him. But his every insistence, for me, is a self-transition to actions that approach not simply autocracy, but a neo-dictatorial stance," Malaj said in "Weekend Diary" on A2 CNN.
He added that history has shown that dictators have not had a good end and publicly declared that the prime minister should step down from leading the country.
"It's time for him to leave. He can no longer do anything good for Albania. This climate of social division, tensions between Albanians, between political parties and different groups do not serve the country," Malaj said.
