A large-scale fire has engulfed a building complex near the University Hospital of Tirana, putting the lives of citizens and the homes of dozens of families at risk.
More than half of the building is left with only the burnt facade. The fire is suspected to have started in the shops on the first floor of the building and then spread rapidly.
Shkëlqim Goxhaj, the director of the Tirana Fire Department, gave a statement to the media, stating that the fire started in a business on the first floor of the building and the facade contributed to the spread of the flames.
"The fire engines are at the scene, they are working. There are three fire engines. Two in operation, one in the northern part. We have brought in all the necessary tools to enable extinguishing the fire.
From the volume of the fire that we see, the fire started on the first floor of the building, where there was a business. After bringing the situation under control, we will launch the official expertise on the start of the fire. We focused on both ends of the fire sources. We have also concentrated forces on the terrace. So far we have no information about fatal consequences, which is very important.
"The facade has influenced the spread of the fire ," said Goxhaj.
So far, 7 people have been left asphyxiated, 3 firefighters and 4 citizens have been sent to the QSUT emergency room.
