The Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hitaj, was present on the ground after the massive fire that engulfed a building in the "Farmacia 10" area, near the "Mother Teresa" Hospital in Tirana, closely following the emergency operation.
In a statement to the media, he announced that no victims have been reported so far, while the people presented to the hospital have mainly shown signs of asphyxiation.
" They have no problems, but simply asphyxiation. We have not yet taken stock of all the consequences. When we check all the businesses, we will let you know the balance ," said the Police Director.
According to him, fire service employees also suffered minor injuries during the intervention.
" The fire service workers have minor burns, no serious injuries ," he said.
Hitaj emphasized that all structures were put into action immediately after receiving the notification of the fire, including special police structures.
" All structures have been engaged upon receiving the notification. RENEA forces and other units have been made available ," he declared.
Regarding the situation on the ground, the Police Director underlined that the checks are ongoing and that a complete verification of all apartments and premises of the building has not yet been carried out.
" There is no official announcement of loss of life. Not all the apartments have been checked. We will have a detailed assessment later ," he said.
In parallel with the intervention to extinguish the flames, the authorities have also launched investigations to clarify the causes of the fire.
" We are collecting evidence, we are taking security cameras and the people involved will be questioned. If there are people responsible, they will be held accountable ," the Police Director declared.
Meanwhile, the field operation continues with the engagement of over 50 forces, including firefighters, civil emergencies and the army, as well as the aerial intervention of Cougar helicopters, in an effort to bring the flames under complete control and avoid danger to residents and the surrounding area.
