The failure of a Trump-branded hotel project in Belgrade has not dampened Serbia's interest in attracting more American investment, according to the country's President, Aleksandar Vučić. The hotel project, backed by investors including Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was suspended after mass protests and accusations that the Serbian government had illegally granted construction permits.
President Aleksandar Vučić, who has been facing protests for more than a year against what critics describe as an increasingly autocratic and corrupt government, told the Financial Times that he remains committed to attracting American investment.
"Americans are smart people... who aim to have a greater impact. We need to have a good relationship with the US and I look forward to starting that strategic dialogue," he said.
Vučić said that Donald Trump's second presidency represents a big change compared to his first term.
"This time they are even more focused on business issues and very willing to bring financial and other investors to Serbia ," he said.
Vučić presented the country's energy sector, long dominated by Russia, as an ideal field for American investment.
"Through the energy sector, Americans can have real impact in the years and decades to come ," he said.
Vučić mentioned plans to build a multi-billion dollar hydroelectric power plant on the Danube River, as well as a large data center in southwestern Serbia, which would be supplied with energy from renewable sources for cooling needs.
Washington has imposed sanctions on NIS, Serbia's only oil refinery, due to its Russian ownership, although it has so far repeatedly granted temporary exemptions to delay their implementation while Belgrade seeks a solution.
NIS has announced that it has concluded talks with the Hungarian company MOL to acquire the 56 percent of the shares owned by Gazprom Neft. Vučić said he is confident that MOL will buy the Russian shares, reducing Moscow's influence in Serbia's energy sector and the wider region.
He said the US and Russia have reached an agreement "on something between them" and that Belgrade has received "a kind of friendly warning" that the sanctions exemption may not be extended after its expiration at the end of July.

Vuçiç argumentoi se marrëdhëniet e tij të hershme me Donald Trumpin, si një nga të paktët udhëheqës evropianë që vazhdon të jetë në detyrë që prej mandatit të parë të presidentit amerikan, dhe aftësia për të tërhequr investime amerikane do ta ndihmojnë Serbinë të ruajë ritmin e rritjes ekonomike dhe atë vetë të qëndrojë në pushtet.
Opozita e sheh situatën ndryshe. Savo Manojloviç, udhëheqës i lëvizjes opozitare Kreni-Promeni (Go-Change), tha se akuzat për korrupsion, përfshirë ato që lidhen me projektin e dhënë Jared Kushnerit, “përbëjnë një shkatërrim të plotë të shtetit të së drejtës”.
Sipas tij, Vuçiç nuk është një udhëheqës që e qeveris shoqërinë në mënyrë efektive. Ai është burimi kryesor i tensioneve dhe i paqëndrueshmërisë.
Projekti i hotelit Trump u pezullua vitin e kaluar pasi qeveria serbe u akuzua se kishte miratuar në mënyrë të paligjshme ndërtimin në vendin ku ndodhej ish-selia e Ministrisë së Mbrojtjes, e bombarduar nga avionët e NATO-s gjatë fushatës ajrore të vitit 1999 kundër Serbisë.
Polemikat shtuan presionin ndaj Vuçiçit nga lëvizja protestuese e udhëhequr nga studentët, e cila është shndërruar në sfidën më të madhe për 13 vitet e tij në pushtet. Protestat nisën pas shembjes së çatisë së një stacioni hekurudhor të ndërtuar në kuadër të një projekti hekurudhor të mbështetur nga Kina, ku humbën jetën 16 persona. Ngjarja nxiti akuza për korrupsion të rrënjosur në qeveri.
Pavarësisht krizës politike, Vuçiç nuk ka dhënë shenja se do të largohet nga pushteti. Ai është zotuar të shpallë zgjedhje të parakohshme parlamentare deri në fund të vitit dhe të kandidojë për postin e kryeministrit, të cilin e ka mbajtur edhe më parë. Ky veprim do t'i mundësonte të anashkalonte kufizimet kushtetuese të mandatit presidencial.
Në intervistën e tij, Vuçiç fajësoi Bashkimin Evropian se ka nxitur kundërshtimin ndaj investimeve të lidhura me Donald Trumpin në rajon, përfshirë edhe në Shqipëri, ku një projekt i lidhur me Jared Kushnerin ka shkaktuar kundërshtime të njohura si "Revolucioni i Flamingos”
"Evropianët mbështetën fuqishëm të gjithë ata që ishin kundër këtij lloj investimi. E kuptova menjëherë këtë. Prandaj Kushneri u tërhoq dhe edhe ne e ndalëm projektin në një fazë të hershme. Në Shqipëri projekti shkoi më tej dhe tani ata po përballen me probleme shumë më të mëdha se ne”, tha Vuçiç.
The European Commission and members of the European Parliament have called on Albania, which, like Serbia, is seeking EU membership, to respect EU environmental standards and public procurement rules when granting rights to Jared Kushner and other investors to develop a project near a protected natural area. The European Commission declined to comment on the Trump hotel project in Belgrade.
"We welcome any international commitment that supports the stability, prosperity and European perspective of the region ," he declared.
The Commission added that Albania will have to demonstrate compliance with European Union environmental standards before the conclusion of accession negotiations.
Vučić called the Trump hotel episode "a big failure of mine," saying he had underestimated Europe's determination to resist a greater American economic presence in the region.
"I didn't understand how important it was for Europe to show the Americans who really is the dominant force on the continent. The EU was protecting its own interests. Do you really believe they would be pleased to see American investors taking their place here?" he said./ Adapted from "FinancialTimes"
