Switzerland and Canada are the two national teams in Group A that have officially secured qualification for the next round of the World Cup.
In the match held in Vancouver, Switzerland triumphed 2-1 over Canada, closing the group in first place with 7 points. The first half ended goalless, but the Swiss opened the scoring immediately after the break. In the 46th minute, Ruben Vargas successfully completed a quick counterattack after an assist from Johan Manzambi.
Switzerland doubled their advantage in the 57th minute, when this time it was Johan Manzambi who found the way to the net, following a pass from Bril Embolo.
The Canadians responded in the 76th minute. Newcomer David Promes scored for 2-1 after a brilliant assist from Nathan Saliba, but the home team could not avoid defeat. Despite the defeat, Canada finished the group in second place with 4 points and secured qualification.
Meanwhile, in the match played in Seattle, Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3-1, keeping hopes alive for a place in the next stage of the tournament.
The Bosnians took the lead in the 29th minute thanks to a superb goal by Kerim Alajbegovic. The 18-year-old Salzburg talent scored from distance with a spectacular shot, in one of the most beautiful goals of this World Cup.
Just five minutes later, Bosnia doubled their lead after an own goal by Sultan Al Brake, who deflected Edin Dzeko's shot into his own net.
Qatar narrowed the gap in the 42nd minute through Hasan Al Haydos, making the first half 2-1. However, in the 80th minute, Ermin Mamic sealed Bosnia and Herzegovina's victory with the third goal of the match.
With this success, Bosnia moves up to third place in the group with 4 points, the same as Canada, but falls behind due to goal difference. The Balkans will await the results of the other groups to learn if they will qualify as one of the eight best third-place national teams.
On the other hand, Switzerland and Canada will learn their opponents in the next round after the conclusion of Group B matches.
