For the first time in the history of the Football World Cup, the 2026 World Cup will open with three different ceremonies, organized in each of the host countries.
FIFA has announced that Mexico City, Toronto and Los Angeles will hold their opening ceremonies before the first matches of the host countries' national teams. The inaugural match of the tournament will take place on June 11 in Mexico City.
The legendary Estadio Azteca will be the scene of the match between Mexico and South Africa. In doing so, it will make history as the first stadium to host matches in three different editions of the World Cup, after also hosting matches in the 1970 and 1986 tournaments.
A day later, on June 12, attention will shift to Toronto, where Canada will host its first-ever men's World Cup match on home soil, against Bosnia and Herzegovina. A special ceremony is planned ahead of the match that will reflect Canadian culture and identity.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles will host the third opening ceremony, before the match between the United States and Paraguay. Organizers have announced a spectacle that will showcase American traditions and culture.
With this new format, the three host countries aim to highlight their cultural identity at the start of a historic World Cup, which for the first time will be held with the participation of 48 national teams.
