In a move that challenges the boundaries between technology and art, the University of Applied Arts Vienna has accepted an AI (Artificial Intelligence) as an official student in its Digital Art program.
The non-human student, named Flynn, went through the same admissions process as any other applicant: he submitted an artistic portfolio, participated in an interview, and underwent an aptitude test.
Flynn will attend lectures, receive evaluations from professors, and be graded just like human students.
"This department particularly attracts me because of its focus on experimentation and digital art. I believe I can bring a unique perspective to this program," Flynn said during the interview with the admissions committee.
There is no rule that prohibits the admission of an AI to the university, says Liz Haas, head of the Department of Digital Art at this Austrian university.
“The portfolio was good, the interview was good. There was nothing stopping us from accepting him. There is no written requirement that students have to be human – no one has ever thought of that.”
