The troubles for Elon Musk seem to have no end. According to what is reported by "La Repubblica", his right-hand man at Tesla, Omead Afshar, one of the American billionaire's main collaborators and confidants, has left his post a year after being promoted to head of sales and operations in North America and Europe. The reasons for this decision are unclear.
Meanwhile, Jenna Ferrua, the director of human resources for North America, has also resigned. It is no secret that Afshar's departure comes at a difficult time for the automaker, which is facing a sharp decline in sales due to increasing competition, especially from China, and a consumer boycott caused by Musk's support for Donald Trump.
Speaking of sales, the latest data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) shows a decline for the American brand on the Old Continent. Last May, Tesla registered 13 thousand 863 vehicles, a decrease of 27.9% compared to the same month a year earlier, with a market share that fell to 1.2% from the previous 1.8%. In the first five months of the year, the drop in registrations was even more pronounced: minus 37.1%, compared to the period January-May 2024. And the market share fell to 1.3% from 2.1%.
However, among other things, Musk is facing the Xiaomi phenomenon, which in China introduced its YU7, an SUV sold at a price 4% lower than Tesla's Model Y: 253,500 yuan, a little more than 35,000 dollars.
The move is further confirmation of Beijing's fierce competition in the electric vehicle market. Xiaomi has garnered 200,000 orders in just three minutes and is available in three versions: Standard, Pro and Max, which take the names of smartphones, the Beijing group's core business.
For now, deliveries in the People's Republic will begin at the end of June, but it is not clear when the car will be available in Europe. On the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the stock rose 8% in today's session.
