A court in Sweden has sentenced a 61-year-old man to 4 years and 5 months in prison after he was found guilty of exploiting and forcing his wife to have sex with more than 120 men.
The ruling came after a trial in Härnösand, eastern Sweden. According to the court, the defendant had used violence and threats against his wife, forcing her to provide sexual services against her will.
The 61-year-old was convicted of several criminal offenses, including aggravated prostitution, attempted rape, physical assault and unlawful threats. He repeatedly denied the charges, claiming he had only helped organize the meetings with the consent of both parties, but the court accepted the prosecution's arguments and concluded that the woman had been systematically exploited.
The case has shocked public opinion in Sweden and attracted attention abroad. International media have compared it to the sensational case in France, where a man was accused of drugging his wife and allowing other men to sexually abuse her for years.
In addition to the 61-year-old, the court also convicted 28 other men involved in the scheme. Swedish authorities identified around 120 people who had contact with the woman, but only 29 of them were prosecuted in connection with the case.
Most of the accused have denied involvement, stating that they did not have sexual relations with the woman or that they did not pay for these encounters.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the 61-year-old to pay his wife compensation of around £15,900.
The couple's identity has not been made public, in accordance with Swedish legislation on the protection of victims in such cases.
