Only 36.88% of citizens voted, Kosovo marks the lowest turnout in elections

The parliamentary elections held on June 7, 2026 marked the lowest level of civic participation in Kosovo's post-war electoral history.

According to a comparative analysis published by KosovaPress , only 36.88 percent of eligible citizens participated in the electoral process, leaving behind the previous negative record of 2007.

At that time, when the country was on the verge of declaring independence, turnout had reached 40.09 percent, a figure that at the time was considered worrying for the political class and public opinion.

Data shows that citizen interest in the elections has fluctuated over the years. In 2017, turnout was 41.3 percent, while in the 2014 elections it reached 42.63 percent.

Then, in 2019, 44.56 percent of the electorate voted, while the 2021 special elections recorded a higher turnout of 48.78 percent.

Compared to these processes, the results of the last elections show a significant decline in citizens' interest in participating in political decision-making.

On the other hand, the record for participation remains that of the first parliamentary elections after the war, organized on November 17, 2001. In that process, 64.30 percent of eligible citizens voted, the highest level ever recorded in post-war Kosovo.

However, experts remind that the participation rate does not necessarily translate into the lowest number of voters, as this indicator is also directly affected by the size of the electoral body in each election.
