The session on the name of the President, the opposition boycotts! Kurti:

According to the Constitutional Court's decision, the deadline for electing a new president ends tomorrow, otherwise the country risks going to new elections...

The Kosovo Assembly session has begun to discuss the election of the president. Only the Vetëvendosje Movement deputies are present at the session, while the opposition has boycotted the session as it had warned.

The Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, during the extraordinary session to elect the president, criticized the opposition for their absence in the hall, emphasizing that each MP is obliged by the Constitution to be present, except in cases where they receive permission.

"In a parliamentary democracy there can be deep political differences, clashes, debates and even complete disagreements. But I think there is a line that should not be crossed and this line is our obligation, everyone's, to respect the constitutional order. The absence of the opposition is an action that produces direct consequences, blocking a constitutional procedure and pushing the country towards an unnecessary crisis," she said, citing the Constitutional Court's ruling that MPs are obliged to remain in the hall during the process and 2/3 of the votes are needed.

After the Speaker of the Parliament, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti took the floor, saying that the failure to elect a president leads the country to new elections.

"Today we have reached the end of the constitutional deadline for electing the President of the Republic. The election of the President is crucial for the continued functioning of the government, the Assembly and the institution of the President at full capacity. Failure to elect the President leads the country to new elections," he said.

Kurti further added that Vetëvendosje has never shied away from responsibility despite the accusations made by the opposition.

"The accusations that VV is evading responsibility are not true. There was no delay, no hesitation, and no avoidance in assuming responsibilities to govern, neither in March 2021 nor in February of this year. This is measurable and verifiable ," Kurti said.

Kurti expressed his willingness and interest in finding a solution to this issue. He spoke about the compromise, saying that it should be democratic and not a bargain to appease political figures.

"Political agreement and compromise between political parties for a governing coalition is the most normal thing in a democracy. But compromise in a democracy must be democratic. Compromise is not a bargain that is concluded to accommodate political figures. The real compromise, the one that serves the citizens, is built on two non-negotiable pillars, firstly on respect for the outcome of the elections, that is, respect for the will of the citizens and the political weight that they have given to each political subject and secondly on institutional and democratic responsibility that derives from public engagement and from the fact that you are an elected representative of the people ," he said.

Kurti also mentioned the election result, saying that it must be respected and that this is not submission. The word "submission", according to the Prime Minister, has been misused by the opposition, saying that it understands compromise as submission to the winner of the elections.

" The election result is not enough to just be accepted, the election result must be respected and respecting the result is not submission, another term misused by the opposition in this hall and outside it. If there is a submission, it is to the verdict of the citizens, who have determined by vote the weight of which political entity, thus also determining the parliamentary behavior. Precisely because of the misunderstanding of the word "submission", the opposition understands compromise as submission to the winner of the elections. Compromise is an agreement that reflects the reality of the electoral mandate by giving others what is due to them according to their electoral weight" , Kurti said.

Before the start of the extraordinary session, Besnik Tahiri, head of the parliamentary group of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, said that they will not participate in the session of the Kosovo Assembly to discuss the election of the president. Tahiri said that serious discussions about the president should have been held in the past months.

" AAK was not invited to these discussions, did not participate and consequently we do not participate in a discussion that is again a public performance ," said Tahiri.

He added that today's discussion is expected to be a "monologue," referring to the ruling party, the Vetëvendosje Movement.

PDK leader Bedri Hamza also reiterated his position that his party has concluded its contribution to the presidential issue. He said that all the proposals made by his party "have not been taken into consideration" by the LVV.

"I wish you success in electing the president with the other 90 members of the Assembly ," Hamza said after the end of the regular plenary session.

We remind you that according to the decision of the Constitutional Court, the deadline for electing a new president ends tomorrow, otherwise the country risks going to new elections.
