Parties in Kosovo close to agreement on President, Vetevendosje welcomes

The Vetëvendosje Movement has welcomed the proposal of the elected MP of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, Besnik Tahiri, that two candidates compete for the election of president - one from the winning party of the elections and one from the parties that have been in opposition.

The elected LVV MP, Adnan Rrustemi, has stated that the president is the responsibility of all MPs and not just the parliamentary majority, assessing that such a competition would ensure the necessary quorum for the election of the head of state.

" There are different ways to overcome the blockade if there is political will. This is one of the ways. The opposition has enough signatures to nominate a candidate. If they had done that last time, we would not have had the June 7 elections ," Rrustemi declared.

The idea was put forward a day earlier by Besnik Tahiri, who proposed that the former opposition parties support Ramush Haradinaj as a presidential candidate, while facing him would be a candidate from Vetëvendosje. According to this scenario, with 57 LVV MPs and 47 former opposition MPs, the quorum of 80 MPs would be ensured, necessary in the first two rounds of voting for the president.

Meanwhile, the Democratic League of Kosovo has announced that it is not changing its position regarding the presidential candidacy. LDK Vice President Lutfi Haziri has stated that Vjosa Osmani remains the party's candidate for the post of president.

" It's been 10 days since I presented the comprehensive principles for cooperation. I do not go beyond my principles, especially for the first party, the second party and the fifth party ," Haziri said.

Regarding Tahiri's proposal, KOHA announced that it has also requested a position from the Democratic Party of Kosovo, but has not received a response.

A call for a broader political agreement has also been made by the elected MP from the Serbian community, Nenad Rashic. The acting Minister for Communities and Returns has assessed that the Albanian parties should reach a joint plan for the creation of institutions.

"A comprehensive planning, not just phase after phase or creating a part of the institutions without having a plan for what will be done with the other institutions. It is very important that we all have a package so that we do not enable the enemies of Kosovo's institutions to influence with some pressures ," stated Rashic.

The June 7 snap elections were held after the previous legislature's deputies failed to elect a president, leading the country to new elections.
