The Democratic Party has described the fire that occurred the day before in a building in Tirana as the result of a failed urban development model.
In a public statement, DP leadership member Grigels Muçollari said that the event "is not a tragic coincidence," but is directly related to the way construction permits have been granted over the years.
"It is a direct consequence of a failed urban development model, where for years construction permits have been issued without standards, without control and without respecting the minimum safety of citizens," he declared.
According to Muçollari, the problems are also related to the quality of construction and the materials used, emphasizing that in many cases priority has been given to the external appearance of the buildings.
"Instead of real security standards, a culture of facades has been built. Buildings that look beautiful from the outside, but that essentially do not guarantee even the minimum of security for residents," he said.
He added that this development model has resulted in a high-density city and increased risks to urban security.
"This model has produced an overcrowded, high-density city with increased risks to urban safety ," said Muçollari.
In the statement, the responsibility for the situation is described as political and institutional. The DP representative directly accused Prime Minister Edi Rama.
"Responsibility is not just technical. It is political and institutional," he stressed, adding that "the prime minister's statement is an attempt to hide the real responsibility, which is actually himself."
Muçollari also raised concerns about emergency response capacities.
"The fact that structures from several municipalities are mobilized for a fire in a building clearly shows the lack of capacity," he stated.
The Democratic Party demands a full and independent investigation into the event, verification of the materials used in the facades of the buildings, an audit of construction permits, and an increase in the capacities of emergency services.
In conclusion, the DP considers the situation as a moment that requires immediate reflection.
"The facade model has failed. Changing this approach is a necessity," concluded Muçollari.
