After Rama's accusations, Vetëvendosje reacts harshly: We are not organizing the protest
The Vetëvendosje Movement has reacted to Prime Minister Edi Rama's statements, denying any organizational or political involvement in the protests that have been taking place for 23 days in Albania.
Member of the General Council of Vetëvendosje, Enver Dugolli, stated that the political entity he represents has no connection with the organization of the protest, while admitting that he and several other activists support it individually.
" Vetëvendosje has nothing to do with this protest. We, some activists or exponents, simply stand in solidarity with the citizens' legitimate demands and their concerns. That's all. There is no question that Vetëvendosje from Kosovo or from any other part has any special role in this protest ," said Dugolli.
He asked Prime Minister Rama to avoid including Vetëvendosje in the debate on the protests and to focus on the demands of the citizens who are protesting.
" I think the language used by Rama for Vetëvendosje does not do him any credit either. He must communicate with the revolted citizens of Albania, Tirana, other cities and the diaspora, give an account and reflect on their demands ," said Dugolli.
According to him, mentioning Vetëvendosje in this context is unnecessary, as the support of some individuals is only related to solidarity with the protesters and not to a political commitment of the party.
" Prime Minister Rama must communicate with the protesters who have been filling the squares and streets of Tirana for days. This protest is not being organized by Vetëvendosje, but by citizens of Albania and members of the diaspora who are expressing their dissatisfaction with the government ," he added.
The reaction comes after Prime Minister Edi Rama criticized the participation of citizens from Kosovo and North Macedonia in the opposition protests in Tirana. In a post published a day earlier, he also mentioned members and supporters of Vetëvendosje, describing some of them as involved in what he called a “soup of devils.”
" I cannot, nor under any circumstances, hold Albin Kurti responsible for any of the Vetëvendosje sallahanas who have been involved in this mess of hell ," Rama wrote.
The Albanian prime minister also criticized the participation of protesters from Kosovo and North Macedonia, arguing that they cannot be considered part of Albania's diaspora.
