Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku has accused the government of changing the law on the protection of agricultural land to pave the way for its use for photovoltaic and wind parks, favoring, according to her, "next-generation clients," instead of supporting farmers and domestic production.
According to Tabaku, while Albanian agriculture is in crisis and farmers are facing a lack of funds, declining exports, and rising costs, the government is using the European integration process as an excuse for changes that are unrelated to European Union requirements.
" Agriculture is in a coma, while the government is adopting a law that allows the use of agricultural land for the construction of wind and photovoltaic parks. Even the little agricultural land that remains is being made available without criteria, without principles and without clear rules. Integration is being used as a justification for vested interests, while there is no request from the European Union for these changes ," Tabaku declared.
The Democratic MP raised doubts that concrete investments could be hidden behind legal changes, recalling that similar cases have only been discovered after decisions have been made.
" Is there any concrete requirement for wind or photovoltaic parks, for which the law is being changed? Because that's what we're used to. Maybe in a short time we'll learn about it from the media ," she said.
Tabaku also brought to attention the situation of the agricultural sector, emphasizing that its weight in the economy has decreased significantly, while farmers are facing a lack of IPARD funds and the loss of competitiveness of Albanian products due to the depreciation of the euro.
" Agriculture has dropped from about 20% of Gross Domestic Product to 15% and is heading towards 14%. IPARD funds are lacking, while the devaluation of the euro has made Albanian products less competitive and left farmers in survival conditions. The government does not take measures for farmers, does not support Albanian products and does not reduce costs for families. It changes laws whenever the interests of its clients change ," said Tabaku.
In conclusion, the DP MP accused the majority of using the Assembly to pass laws in the service of private interests.
" There is no request from the European Union for the sale or alienation of agricultural land. It is only the request of the next client. We need to change this system: Parliament turned into a notary of business laws ," Tabaku concluded.
