The statement by the Union of Albanian Journalists about the attacks and hate speech against journalists during the protests of recent days has brought the reaction of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has chosen to attack the protesters and the organizers of the movement.
In its statement, the Union of Albanian Journalists states that it supports the civic protests of recent weeks and considers them a contribution to democracy and freedom of expression.
However, the organization raises concern about attacks, lynchings, and hate speech against journalists on social media, calling for institutional intervention against the most flagrant cases.
" The Albanian Journalists' Union is at the same time very concerned by the individual acts of lynching of some journalists who share different public opinions and positions on issues, political actors and their analyses. Democracy contains pluralism and when it is complete, it is no longer "hybrid". The lynching of journalists by certain anonymous groups, by fanatical activists of parties or political leaders, by aggressive and fanatical persons of currents, criminal and interest groups, by individuals criminalized in mind and conscience, as well as the use of hate speech against them, is an anti-civil act, a criminal act and deserves to be punished ," the statement says, which simultaneously condemns attacks on journalists and the use of hate speech online.
The Union's statement was also distributed by Prime Minister Edi Rama, but not to comment on the organization's support for the protests. The head of government focused on the incidents and aggressive behavior that have been reported in recent days, presenting them as a dominant feature of the protest.
" The Albanian Journalists' Union has no connection with the government, except in cases where it has made negative statements about the government! But I am posting the attached statement of the Union because it is related to the most important and most disturbing truth of the protest of recent weeks: The fascist spirit of a large number of online bullies, which is the dominant spirit of the protest, which also materializes in the bullying crowd of marchers in the streets ," he says.
The Prime Minister further referred to an episode reported the night before, where, according to him, protesters used violence against drivers who did not join the protest.
" In the video, it is precisely the latter who beat up drivers last night for not honking their horns, according to the orders of this group of two-legged jackals ," Rama wrote.
