"Europe is listening to the voices of the protesters", Tabaku raises

Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, is in Strasbourg, where the European Parliament is discussing the progress report on Albania. Together with the head of the DP Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, and the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Agron Gjekmarkaj, she is holding meetings with MEPs and representatives of European political groups.

In a video message from Strasbourg, Tabaku stated that the issues that citizens have been protesting for days in Tirana have become part of discussions with European representatives.

"The issues for which protesters have filled the streets of Tirana are the same issues that have been in the European Parliament's reports for years," she said.

According to the Democratic MP, issues such as the Strategic Investment Law, changes to the Law on Protected Areas, corruption, the fight against organized crime, and the lack of opportunities for young people have been continuously highlighted by European institutions.

"The Strategic Investment Law, the Protected Areas Law, corruption, the fight against organized crime and the lack of opportunities for young people are simultaneously issues of Albania and Europe," declared Tabaku.

She emphasized that these issues are not only concerns of the opposition or protesters, but are part of the assessments that the European Union has made over the years for the country.

"The voice of the protesting citizens is being brought to the European Parliament today and will be part of the parliamentary debate on Albania," she said.

Tabaku argued that Albania should follow European standards of the rule of law, independent institutions, and transparency in governance.

According to her, the country cannot move towards European integration if it continues to function with models that favor narrow political or economic interests.

"Albania should follow the European model of the rule of law, transparency and strong institutions, and not the path of an electoral autocracy or a captured state that adopts laws on demand and in the interests of a minority," said the Democratic MP.

She added that citizens' protests represent opposition to this model of governance and the demand for more democracy, accountability, and opportunities for young people.

The purpose of the meetings in Strasbourg, according to Tabaku, is for concerns related to the rule of law, corruption, transparency and democracy to be part of European discussions on the future of Albania and the process of integration into the European Union.
