The inaugural ceremony of the first Tirana-Toronto flight, connecting Albania with Canada for the first time, took place at the Mother Teresa International Airport. Prime Minister Edi Rama also attended the event.
Rama also focused on the transformation of the "Mother Teresa" International Airport, stating that Tirana holds the first place in Europe for the increase in the number of passengers. According to him, in 2016 the airport registered 22 thousand flights per year and 2.2 million passengers, while in 2025 the number of passengers reached 13.7 million and that of flights to 82 thousand.
Rama added that the number of flights is expected to exceed 100,000 by the end of this decade. The Prime Minister also announced that the airport will soon enter a new phase of modernization, with the installation of digital gates for Albanian citizens with biometric passports.
According to him, entry to the airport will be carried out without traditional controls, while data will be processed through artificial intelligence systems, in what he described as a significant transformation of the airport.
"Tirana Airport holds the first place in Europe for the increase in the number of passengers. From 2016 to 2025, the growth has been staggering. In 2016, there were 22 thousand flights per year for 2.2 million passengers. Less than 10 years later, the number of passengers reached 13.7 million and the number of flights to 82 thousand. We think that it will exceed 100,000 by the end of this decade. Rinas is among the first to take the step of digitalizing the Check-in process. Soon, we will open here a new chapter of the digital transformation of the airport and its modernization, digital gates, which will be gates where you will enter without any kind of control if you are Albanian and have a biometric passport. This will make it so that all Albanian passengers who enter Rinas enter as if they were at home and all the information will be obtained through the artificial intelligence that this gate will have. It will be a "extraordinary transformation in many aspects," he said.
