The White House has nominated General Eric Wendt as ambassador to Tirana. Former ambassador Arben Çejku said that the US has returned its attention to countries lacking ambassadors, including Tirana, calling this a positive development for Albania.
According to him, the new candidacy for ambassador presents a serious profile, but the confirmation process in the Senate could take several months and remains crucial.
Çejku emphasizes that the proposed name creates expectations for a more balanced representation of political and diplomatic interests in the country.
"Finally, the US realized that it was missing an ambassador in Tirana; Macedonia and Belgrade have been without an ambassador for some time. Even the functioning of the Albanian embassy in the US has not reached any point of who knows what. There is a return of attention to the empty seats and secondly, as a profile, it is a serious profile.
It's a long way until he comes to Tirana; we have to prepare for several months if everything goes well. It would be good news for Albania if he didn't have any obstacles. We have two diplomats who didn't make it through the Senate; last year we had a Trump nomination for ambassador to the Senate. Wendt should get the votes in the Senate.
"It's very intriguing for our Tirana; just his name placed in the context of all the expectations and possibilities makes him a good interpreter of these political colors, " said Çejku.
