While in Albania the protest against the project in Zvërnec has entered its 45th day and has turned into a revolt against the government and the entire political class, Prime Minister Edi Rama has chosen to defend the project from Brussels, insisting that everything is proceeding according to European Union standards.
Asked during the Albania-EU Intergovernmental Conference about the debates that the project has also caused in the European Parliament, Rama stated that the European Commission is informed of every development and that there is no reason for concern.
" For us, all voices are respectable, but there is one voice that we take very seriously, the voice of the Commission. The Commission is at the forefront of everything by being very well-informed, based on facts. In this world of information and debatable views, where the truth finds less and less space, the Commission remains the one that firmly holds objectivity, because it works on facts, data and verified sources. I am sure that you too, if you were interested in facts and verified sources, would understand that there is nothing to worry about ," said Rama.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the project is still in the preparation phase and that environmental procedures are being followed according to the rules.
" The project is still a work in progress. It cannot be seen anywhere, because it has not been finalized. The environmental impact assessment is in progress. Everything is being done according to the rules since day one. For us, the rule book of membership standards and the European Commission applies. The idea that Albania would continue with something that would not be in full compliance with these standards is a baseless claim. We will make a project that will be a source of pride for Albania and Europe. This is my ambition and we will be rigorous in demanding only the highest standards ," Rama said.
