DP leader Sali Berisha has once again lashed out at the media he considers close to the government, accusing them of hiding reality and serving as channels for what he called "banal evil."
In an interview with the Journalism Department in Tirana, the leader of the Democratic Party focused on the no-confidence referendum on the party's leadership, complaining that media close to the government tried to present it as a worthless process, while, according to him, they remained silent on other issues that he considers more problematic.
"I'm taking the referendum. You can never multiply direct democracy by zero. Okay, it's not a competition, but every person who votes has the right to put a cross, and he knows that a cross does not solve anything. How can you demonize a process? It's a typical case that within the framework of banal evil you transform its meaning. It is the most democratic form since Greece until today," said Berisha.
He then moved on to another topic, expressing surprise at the lack of media reactions to Prime Minister Edi Rama's decoration of Bardhyl Agas.
"They are going to decorate Bardhyl Agas. No media is reacting. Horrible. What is he? The father of a man who coordinated one of the most savage cartels in Europe. Instead of presenting this irresponsible act, they are presenting him as someone he is not. I regret this," declared the democratic leader.
Defending the May 23 referendum, Berisha said that in the Democratic Party the membership had the opportunity to vote in confidence for the leader, while according to him, similar processes have not been taking place in the Socialist Party for years.
"The truth is that Saturday's referendum is the most representative form, it is direct democracy, while the other side has not voted once for 17 years and this is distorted by government-controlled propaganda that it was not a contest," he said.
But the most interesting part of the interview was the one related to former MP Ervin Salianji, for whom Berisha used one of the strongest political formulations of recent months.
"Only primitive political beings can allow themselves such decisions. If you created a party, follow your party. You can't imagine going back. Or the other one who, for the sake of truth, went to prison as a hero and came out cloned with a specific mission, absolutely ," said Berisha.
The DP leader also claimed that Salianji had sought support from people he linked to the underworld, arguing that this was the reason why he was considered self-excluded from the party.
"He was running errands with the help of powerful drug cartel clans and he was told that he was self-excluded. If you run a race and ask for the help of killers and they send messages to your party members, get out, otherwise, you know what price they are asking, every party leader is obliged to protect his members ," Berisha declared.
Finally, he insisted that the "one member, one vote" model and votes of confidence through referendum are widespread practices in political parties in many countries around the world.
