In a message sent to the Australian people, the monarch said that "our hearts are with all those affected, including the police officers who were injured while protecting members of their community."

 He also praised the community and the support they showed to those affected in Australia, adding that the light of the Hanukkah festival will always triumph over the darkness of such evil.

"In times of pain, Australians always come together in unity and determination. I know that the spirit of community and love that shines so brightly in Australia and the light at the heart of the Hanukkah festival will always triumph over the darkness of such evil ," he said.

Prince William and Princess Catherine of Wales also sent a message, saying their "thoughts are with every Australian today".

Another video shows a survivor kicking the alleged perpetrator in the head as he lies on the ground in handcuffs, before police push him away.

Further footage shows a hero disarming one of the terrorists before pointing his gun at him.

A video posted on social media filmed a man hiding behind cars before attacking one of the gunmen, grabbing the gun from his hands and pointing it at him as he drove away.

Narvid Akram, a man from Sydney's Bonnyrigg, has been identified as one of the gunmen, the ABC reported, citing an unnamed senior police source. Authorities reportedly raided Akram's home after the shooting.

Police announced that one of the gunmen was on the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) watch list, but was not considered an "immediate threat".

Police also said there was no active threat, but warned people to stay away from the area while they worked to defuse several improvised explosive devices. The devices were found scattered around the shooting scene and inside the terror suspects' car.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly condemned the attack, calling it "disgusting" and a "dark moment for the nation."

"This is a targeted attack against Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith," Albanese told a press conference in Canberra.

"An act of satanic anti-Semitism, terrorism that has struck at the heart of our nation. An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian and every Australian tonight will be, like me, devastated by this attack on our way of life. There is no place for this hatred, violence and terrorism in our nation. Let me be clear, we will eradicate it ," he added.

The moment a civilian disarms a terrorist

The incredible footage shows the man, wearing a light blue shirt and black trousers, sitting behind a parked vehicle next to the gunman, who is facing him and firing his weapon.

Immediately after the gunman shoots, the man in the blue shirt comes up from behind, grabs him by the neck, and tries to grab his firearm.

The person recording the moments takes a deep breath and shouts "oh my God," as the man in the blue shirt snatches the gun from the shooter's hands and pushes the gunman to the ground.

Then he turns the gun and points it at the shooter, who drops to his knees and turns to look at the man in the blue shirt.

Gunshots can be heard throughout the video, apparently from a second person shooting from a nearby bridge.

Another bystander records the incident from a slightly different angle, showing another person wearing a red T-shirt running towards the man in the blue T-shirt, apparently to help, while a woman screams in the background, "no."

The man in the blue shirt approaches the person who has already shot the disarmed man with the gun pointed at him, while the second person falls to the ground. 

The shooter stands up and attempts to walk away, turning to look briefly at the man in the blue shirt who is still pointing the gun at him.
