The Tirana Court decided to sentence 14-year-old Mario Perlleshi to 16 years in prison, after finding him guilty of the murder of his peer Martin Cani.
It is learned that the minor has also been convicted of the attempted murder of the minor, Luis Meçja.
The prosecution requested 25 years in prison for the 14-year-old, but according to the Criminal Code for Minors, he cannot be sentenced to more than 12 years. Perlleshi was sentenced to 12 years for the murder of Martin and 10 years for the attempted murder of Luis, but when the sentences were combined, he was ultimately sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Only the father of the deceased, Martin Cani, and Luis Meçja attended the hearing.
Meanwhile, in a statement to the media, Martin Can's father said that this decision is a ray of light for his family.
"The whole of Tirana knows about Martin's incident. We remain silent and silence often kills. The school has not even asked for repentance, nothing. When we talk about the issue since Friday and with an SMS we could have saved lives... the school did not inform us," said the father of the deceased.
While the Cani family's lawyer said that this is a matter of justice.
"We have a court decision that is fair. Two murders were considered in the decision. We think it is not a matter of punishment, but of justice," he said.
How the incident happened:
The murder of Martin Cani occurred on November 18, 2024, in Tirana, about 200 meters from the "Fan Noli" school.
The conflict between the two teenagers had started three days before the incident, inside the school premises for weak motives. Although it had seemingly died down, the conflict flared up again inside the school.
The two minors clashed in the school toilets during the morning of the incident and argued violently, but were separated by a security guard.
After class, accompanied by their friends, they met near the school, where the conflict escalated into a physical fight, ending with the killing of Martin and the wounding of Luis Meça.
