A 68-year-old Albanian man ended up in the hands of the Greek police in the area of Florina, after he was transporting a large amount of cannabis.
According to Greek authorities, the arrest was carried out following an operation organized by the Crime Investigation and Detection Section in Florence, as part of actions against drug trafficking.
During the search of the vehicle driven by the 68-year-old, officers discovered two travel bags and a sack containing 50 packages of raw cannabis. The total weight of the narcotics amounted to 55 kilograms and 422 grams.
The police seized the narcotics, the vehicle used for transportation, and three mobile phones that were found in the possession of the arrested person.
Greek authorities say that in recent months there has been an increase in drug trafficking cases from Albania to Greece. According to official data, over 1.2 tons of marijuana have been seized in the regions of Igoumenitsa, Ioannina, Kostur, Florina and Thessaloniki over the past 11 months.
A criminal proceeding has been initiated against the 68-year-old for a criminal offense in the category of serious crimes. After the completion of the police procedures, he was sent before the First Instance Prosecutor's Office in Florina, while investigations to fully clarify the case are continuing by the relevant Greek police structures.
