The Durrës Court has ordered security measures for three former employees of the Albanian Post branch in Durrës, arrested following investigations into suspicions of embezzlement of 69 million lek intended for the distribution of pensions and social assistance.
At the end of the session, held behind closed doors, the court imposed "prison arrest" on the former director of the branch, Elisabeta Mataj, while "house arrest" was imposed on Valbona Duni, former head of finance, and Paola Danaj, treasurer.
The three former officials were arrested following a criminal proceeding registered by the Durrës Prosecution Office for the criminal offenses of "Abuse of office" and "Theft by abuse of office", committed in collaboration.
According to the investigative file, Elisabeta Mataj was a regular frequenter of gambling establishments. According to the statements of her two former subordinates, it was former director Elisabeta Mataj who personally showed up to collect the money from the cash register.
From the investigations so far, it was revealed that, during the months of April and May 2026, they are suspected of having embezzled 69 million new lek, an amount that was supposed to be collected from the Albanian Post branch in Durrës for the Shijak and Kruja branches, with the aim of distributing pensions and social assistance to citizens.
The investigations are being led by prosecutor Gazmend Frëngu, while the case was reviewed by judge Xhevdet Lika.
