Thomas Tuchel will continue to manage the England national team until at least EURO 2028. According to British media reports, the English Football Association is no longer able to activate the clauses that would allow the early termination of the contract with the German coach.
The Athletic reveals that the agreement between the parties included several performance clauses, which could lead to the immediate termination of the collaboration if England did not achieve the targets set at the World Cup. However, these clauses were only valid until the quarter-finals stage.
England's qualification to the semi-finals meant that they no longer had legal force. As a result, the English FA cannot fire Tuchel without paying significant financial compensation.
The situation is further complicated by the lack of a worthy successor. Pep Guardiola remains the most preferred name among English football leaders and was the first choice even before Tuchel's appointment in 2024. However, the Spanish coach decided to renew his contract with Manchester City, forcing the federation to trust the German technician.
At the moment, Guardiola has not given any sign that he is ready to take charge of a national team. This makes any move even more difficult for the English Football Association, which, at least for now, seems forced to continue the project with Thomas Tuchel.
