Argentina will be looking to make history in the World Cup final against Spain, where the Albiceleste are aiming to win their second consecutive trophy.
Beyond the major objective of lifting the trophy again, Lionel Messi's team has an additional motive to overcome the final hurdle to glory. The reigning champions want to avoid a scenario that has befallen several previous World Cup winners: failure in the next final, four years after the triumph.
History shows that some national teams have not been able to defend their crown in the next final:
Argentina – After triumphing in the 1986 World Cup with the legendary Diego Maradona, the "Albiceleste" reached the final again in 1990, but were defeated 1-0 by West Germany.
Brazil - "Selecao" won the World Cup in 1994 after the final against Italy, but four years later in France suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat to the hosts in the 1998 final.
France - After triumphing in the 2018 World Cup, the "roosters" went to the final again in 2022, but were stopped by Lionel Messi's Argentina, who secured the trophy after a penalty shootout.
Now it's Argentina's turn to try to avoid this historical "curse" and become one of the few nations to successfully defend the world title.
