Didier Deschamps has led the French national team for the last time in the third-place match of the 2026 World Cup, ending a 14-year adventure on the bench of the "Roosters". Although the World Cup did not end as he had hoped, the French coach stressed that the decision to leave was made exclusively in the interests of the national team.
In an interview with "M6", immediately after the challenge against England, Deschamps explained the reasons that led him to end his cycle.
" The French national team is above everything. It does not belong to me. I have been at its service for 14 years and there is nothing more important than this shirt. I decided that the time had come to close this chapter. And I tell you honestly, this was not a decision for my own good, but for the good of the French national team. The environment had become very difficult for me and the national team did not deserve such a situation.
" This wasn't a decision made overnight. I had been thinking about it for a long time. I could have done it before the World Cup or even during it, but I didn't want to, because I have a lot of respect for the French team ."
The 57-year-old coach also spoke about his future, leaving open the possibility of managing a club or another national team, but announced that he will no longer comment on developments in France.
" I have two options for the future: to manage a club or a national team. Both are possible. But I have decided to adhere to an obligation of discretion. Starting this evening, I will no longer speak about the French national team ."
With this stance, Deschamps aims to avoid exerting any pressure on his successor, Zinedine Zidane, who is expected to take over as France coach.
