Director Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" has posted a record-breaking debut at the box office, grossing an estimated $264 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Of that, $124.5 million was made in North America.
In Italy, where the film was released on July 16, it earned 7.5 million euros in its first three days, helping to quickly cover the production budget.
According to data released by Universal Pictures, “The Odyssey” is the most expensive film of Nolan’s career. The studio invested $250 million in the production and about another $125 million in the promotional campaign. The film was shot in six locations, including Italy, and brings to the screen the legendary journey of the Odyssey, based on the epic of Homer.
This debut constitutes the best result of 2026 for a film with actors and sets a new record for Christopher Nolan, surpassing the openings of his films "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Oppenheimer."
In the United States, "The Odyssey" recorded the third-biggest opening of 2026, behind "Toy Story 5" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie."
