Albanian musical heritage will have a special place in one of the biggest films of recent years. The sounds of Albanian labe polyphony and the double fiddle have become part of the musical inspiration for the soundtrack of the film “The Odyssey,” directed by Christopher Nolan.
Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson has revealed that while creating the film's music, he sought out authentic sounds from ancient cultures, even traveling to southern Albania to record Albanian iso-polyphony.
In an interview with New York Magazine, Göransson revealed that he experienced a special artistic journey, during which he spent a week recording this musical tradition recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
"I went to southern Albania and spent a week recording an ancient style of singing called iso-polyphony, which I had never heard before in a film," the composer said.
In addition to polyphony, he also recorded the sounds of the double fiddle, a traditional instrument used for centuries by Albanian shepherds in the southern areas.
“We recorded the fiddle that Albanian shepherds have been playing for thousands of years ,” said Göransson, describing his experience during the fieldwork.
The film "The Odyssey", based on Homer's epic poem, is one of Christopher Nolan's most ambitious cinematic projects and is awaited with great interest worldwide.
The inclusion of traditional Albanian elements in the soundtrack of this production gives an international resonance to one of the most important assets of Albanian musical culture. The polyphony of labe and the two-part cula will now travel beyond borders, becoming part of a major Hollywood spectacle.
