Moo Deng, the pygmy hippopotamus from Thailand who became a social media phenomenon in 2024, has made her prediction for the World Cup final, which will be played on Sunday.
The resident of Khao Kheow Zoo, about 110 kilometers east of Bangkok, stood in front of two watermelons decorated with the flags of the finalists. Without thinking twice, Moo Deng chose the watermelon with the inscription "ARG", thus predicting the triumph of Argentina.
The zoo director explained that the event was organized as a way to entertain visitors and at the same time stimulate the animal with exercise and games. He stressed that the choice of the hippo does not constitute support for any team and should not be linked to sports betting, which is prohibited in Thailand.
However, not all of Moo Deng's "predictions" have proven accurate. Just a few days ago, she had picked France and England as the two teams that would face off in the World Cup final, a prediction that did not come true.
The two-year-old hippopotamus has become known around the world for her cute appearance and playful demeanor. She also attracted attention in late 2024, when she went viral after "predicting" Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election.
The name Moo Deng in Thai means "Jumping Piggy". Although its predictive "abilities" have no scientific basis, history knows other cases of animals that have become famous for sports predictions. The most famous remains the octopus Paul, who during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa correctly predicted Spain's victory in the final.
