Saranda police have found the motorcycle suspected of being used by the perpetrators of the assassination attempt on 50-year-old Thimjo Rubati, also known as Sandër Rubati, who was injured on Friday evening after a gunshot attack.
The vehicle was found abandoned in the "Baba Rexhepi" neighborhood, in one of the bays of the area known as "Kassollja", by the sea. According to sources from the investigation group, the engine has no signs of burning or damage, which is expected to help forensic experts in collecting biological evidence and genetic materials that could lead to the identification of the perpetrators.
The fact that the motorcycle was found near the coast has strengthened investigators' suspicions that the perpetrators, after leaving the scene on a motorcycle, may have continued their escape on a watercraft or taken refuge in suburban housing.
According to preliminary investigations, the assassination was well-organized. Sources close to the investigative group indicate that the organizers are suspected of having deliberately exploited the event of the previous day, when the victim's son, Andrea Rubati, had a conflict with Police Officer Mihal Velço, to create a false investigation lead.
According to the same sources, the perpetrators were even aware that the police had seized the DVRs of security cameras in the area the night before, taking advantage of this fact to strike at a segment that was not covered by surveillance cameras.
One of the leads being verified is related to the rape of Police Officer Mihal Velço. Andrea Rubati, 27, as well as Antonio Lefteri and Engjëll Dalanaj, all three people with criminal records, are wanted for this incident.
According to the investigation, the perpetrators of the assassination were masked and wore diving suits to hide their identities. They approached on a motorbike, shot at the 50-year-old and then sped away. Another lead being investigated is that, after abandoning the motorbike at the end of "Mithat Hoxha" street, the perpetrators continued their escape on a speedboat.
Police checks have continued throughout the night and even today, but so far it has not been possible to identify or arrest the perpetrators.
Sources from Saranda Hospital indicate that Thimjo Rubati was hit with three bullets, two near the liver and one in the pelvis. According to doctors, the bullets did not hit any vital organs.
After receiving first aid at Saranda Hospital, where he was administered two units of blood, the 50-year-old was transported to Ioannina Hospital for specialized treatment. His condition has stabilized and is out of danger.
In his testimony before investigators, Rubati stated that he was unable to identify the perpetrators of the attack.
The injured man is a well-known name to the Albanian and Greek authorities. He has criminal records for smuggling, illegal possession of weapons and vehicle trafficking. He has previously served a sentence in Greece, and was also wanted by the Albanian authorities in a case involving vehicle trafficking and smuggling, which also involved former customs officials.
For this reason, investigators do not rule out that the assassination is also related to conflicts carried over from the 50-year-old's past, while under the direction of the Prosecutor's Office, investigations continue to fully elucidate the incident, identify the perpetrators, and determine the motive for the attack.
