A prisoner sentenced to 25 years in prison was found dead on Thursday afternoon at the Prison Hospital Center in Tirana.
The news was announced by the General Directorate of Prisons, which announced that it concerns citizen FQ, 47 years old, convicted of the criminal offense of "Murder in other qualifying circumstances" with a final decision in 2007.
According to the official announcement, the convict suffered from mental health problems and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was constantly followed by the health services of the penitentiary system and was treated with specialized medication. During the years 2022-2026, he was hospitalized several times in the Prison Hospital, while the last hospitalization was on May 28, 2026.
According to preliminary data, at around 16:50 he was found hanging himself in the bathroom of the room where he was staying, using his own vehicle.
"Immediately after the discovery, security and health personnel intervened without delay, but from the verifications carried out, it was determined that death had been instantaneous," the Prisons Directorate's response states.
Authorities report that about 30 minutes before the incident, at 4:20 PM, the convict was visited by health personnel, while during this time checks and monitoring were also carried out according to the prescribed procedures.
The Agency for the Supervision of the Execution of Criminal Decisions, in cooperation with the Prosecutor's Office, has launched verifications to fully clarify the circumstances of the event.
The General Directorate of Prisons has expressed its condolences to the family of the 47-year-old and has guaranteed full cooperation with the institutions responsible for investigating the case.
