A 40-year-old Albanian man who escaped from a prison in Albania has been arrested by the Carabinieri in Rome after a spectacular chase in the early hours of Friday morning.
He had committed several crimes. Also with a false identity, he was deeply integrated into the criminal circles of the Italian capital.
The 40-year-old was arrested several years ago in Italy and sentenced to 8 years in prison for drug trafficking and robbery.
He had taken advantage of a bilateral Italy-Albania agreement, seeking to serve his sentence in an Albanian prison on condition that he not return to Italy until 2035.
But once he was sent to Albania, he never showed up at the prison, officially resulting in him being a fugitive.
Then, taking advantage of a provision of Albanian law, he changed his surname to that of his wife. With the new identity, he returned to Italy and moved around unnoticed by the authorities, presenting himself as a person with no criminal record.
At around 04:00 on Friday morning, the Italian police patrol asked him to stop a luxury BMW with German license plates, in the disco-club area of Eur. The fugitive and an accomplice were in the car.
The two Albanians did not obey the stop order and sped away. As they tried to escape the police, the car went off the road at a bend near Tor dei Cenci. The patrol also ended up off the road, but the officers managed to neutralize the two escapees.
Slightly injured, the Albanians were taken to Sant'Eugenio Hospital, where they received a 15-day medical report. The police officers were also treated for minor injuries.
Initially, according to the documents, both were found to be without precedent. But once fingerprints were taken at the Immigration office, the 40-year-old was identified as a wanted person and an escapee from an Albanian prison, with an active sentence of 8 years.
5 thousand euros in cash were found in the vehicle, suspected to be proceeds from selling cocaine near discos in Eur until late at night. Investigations indicate that before his previous arrest in Italy, he frequented drug trafficking circles and was suspected of exploiting prostitution.
The case is raising concerns among Italian authorities, as investigation structures highlight the ability of Albanian criminal groups to change identities, infiltrate quickly, and create strong ties with local mafia groups, especially in drug trafficking.
Investigations continue to uncover the full criminal activity of the 40-year-old.
