New details have emerged from the operation codenamed "Metallurgical", finalized by the Elbasan Police after a months-long investigation into a wide-ranging criminal scheme in the environmental field. Two private companies, "CCALB" Shpk and "GSA Ferrokrom" Shpk, are suspected of having illegally burned waste in the open for nearly two years, causing massive air and water pollution in the area of the former metallurgical plant, in Bradashesh.
According to sources close to the investigation group, the burning of waste was done within the company's perimeter, mainly at night, to avoid the attention of the authorities. In some cases, the Police have attempted to intervene, but the company personnel have not allowed entry to the premises. Recent inspections have found that the companies did not have any equipment for filtering gases, in violation of any environmental safety standards.
Operation "Metallurgical", conducted by the Police in cooperation with the Prosecutor's Office and the National Inspectorate of Territorial Protection, led to the arrest of 16 citizens, including 9 foreigners with technical and managerial roles. Among them are the administrators: JC, 64 years old, a Korean citizen, and EF, 48 years old, a resident of Elbasan.
Also arrested were technical managers, engineers, workers and kiln operators from India and Nepal, as well as local officials such as ID, 60, the head of the Environment Sector in the Elbasan Municipality, who will face charges of "abuse of office" and "falsification of documents."
Meanwhile, 8 shareholders of the companies have been declared wanted, who are accused of a series of serious criminal offenses: "Air, water and land pollution", "Hiding income", "Illegal employment" and "Laundering the proceeds of crime".
