A 23-year-old Albanian man managed to escape in the early hours of the morning from Brindisi prison in Italy, taking advantage of the lack of supervision at the penitentiary institution. However, his freedom only lasted a few hours, as he was located and arrested again by law enforcement.

According to Italian media, the young man managed to evade the guards' control, overcome the fence and the surrounding wall of the penitentiary institution, losing track immediately after the escape.

Following the alert issued by the authorities, the police, carabinieri and prison police officers launched a wide-ranging search operation in the Brindisi area. Investigators focused on Latiano and Mesagne, two areas linked to the fugitive's past.

It was precisely the return to the places where he had lived before his arrest that proved fatal for the 23-year-old. He was found in Latiano, near his girlfriend's apartment, and was put in handcuffs again.

According to the prison police union SAPPE, the escape was facilitated by a lack of staff at the prison. The union claims that a limited number of officers were forced to cover several sectors simultaneously, creating gaps in supervision.

The 23-year-old was serving a sentence for possession of narcotics with intent to distribute and resisting arrest. Meanwhile, the union has warned that it will file a complaint regarding the lack of staff at the Brindisi penitentiary institution.
