Astrit Sinanaj, sentenced to 22 years in prison and charged with four serious criminal offenses, was arrested yesterday in Tirana.
The Tirana Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction has upheld the decision of the Elbasan Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction, which sentenced the 49-year-old to 22 years in prison, of which he still has 13 years left to serve, for the criminal offenses of "Intentional murder committed in a manner that is very dangerous to the lives of many people", attempted, "Unauthorized possession and production of weapons, explosive weapons and ammunition", "Destruction of property with explosives", "Removal of a prisoner from his place of residence".
We recall that on April 24, 2023, the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction upheld the decision of the Elbasan Court, which found guilty and sentenced to prison the 49-year-old man who attempted to kill businessman Fuad Verzivolli on May 6, 2017, by placing 1 kg of C4 TNT on him, which fortunately did not explode.
But how did the two failed assassination attempts in Elbasan, prepared by Sinanaj, happen? The plans to kill businessman Fuad Verzivolli?
On May 6, 2017, Astrit Sinanaj placed 1 kg of C4 TNT under the car of businessman Fuad Verzivolli. The explosive was discovered by a person in the area, who called his cousin, who works as a police officer.
According to the Prosecution's file, the judicial police officer at the Internal Control Service in Elbasan named Saimir Dika, claimed to have been present when the police arrived and surrounded the area. In his testimony, he stated that he was notified by a relative of his colleague.
"… On May 6, 2017, at around 9:45 a.m., I was drinking coffee at the "Grandi" bar and the son of the aunt of a colleague of mine, Libiond Përmarku, called me and said that there was a bomb suspected to be in front of the bar I rent. I told him to call the police and gave him the number 129. After this call, he went to the scene and at the moment he was taking a picture, he heard an explosion like those of the capsules that children use on holidays," he is reported to have said, among other things.
Security cameras from surrounding businesses showed a person placing the amount of TNT and then driving away in a Fiat vehicle. According to the vehicle's license plate, Thanas Thoma, who turned out to be the owner, was called in for questioning.
During his testimony, he stated that on that date, he drove to the center of Elbasan, where he met an acquaintance of his named Astrit Sinanaj, known through a friend of his named Martin Arapi.
"We sat at the bar of the casino where I work together with Astrit, had a coffee and then went home," he is reported to have said.
Astrit Sinanaj was also questioned about this incident, and he claimed that he did not know businessman Fuad Verzivolli, and that he was at the scene by chance.
But Sinanaj did not give up. A few days later, he organized another assassination attempt. This time he placed a quantity of TNT on the door of businessman Fuad Verzivolli's bar called "Club Havana" in Elbasan. This time, the target was not hit, but Sinanaj did not escape from the handcuffs.
He was arrested together with his accomplice Thanas Thoma. The two defendants Sinanaj and Thoma, at the moment of their arrest, realized that there was a listening device in their cell. It was Sinanaj who signaled his friend Thoma not to speak, as they were being listened to, so nothing was heard from the defendants' words.
"Don't talk about it, we'll end up badly," Sinanaj is reported to have said.
After further investigations, Gentian Kllogjri was also arrested. For verification reasons, the defendants were released after 40 days by the Court of First Instance in Elbasan, but the Court of Appeal in Durrës opposed this measure. The appeal requested Sinanaj's return to prison, but it was already too late. The 42-year-old was not found in the apartment when the officers went to arrest him. After two years, he was arrested and today he received his sentence.
Astrit Sinanaj is also known as the cousin of Julian Sinanaj, who is also nicknamed 'The Lone Wolf'.
Julian Sinanaj has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. He confessed to the investigation group that he built the bomb, which was then placed in the car of the prefect of Vlora, Besnik Dervishi. He killed businessman Agron Çela in Vlora, fisherman Sokol Veizaj in Orikum, planted TNT in the house of Ardian Kolloz, a DP deputy, and was going to kill gas businessman Piro Bare. For his cooperation with justice, Sinanaj escaped life imprisonment and was sentenced to only 30 years in prison.
