Albanian member of the "Cekiçi Gang" arrested in France, wanted
Suspected gang leader Johann Guntermann

French police have recently arrested Albanian Rexhino A., suspected of being a member of the left-wing extremist group known as the “Hammerbande.” According to reports in the German newspaper BILD, he was wanted on an international arrest warrant issued by German authorities for involvement in a violent attack on neo-Nazis in Budapest in early 2023.

Rexhino A., also known by the nickname “Gino”, is accused of being part of an organized group consisting of left-wing extremist activists, including Maja T. and Lina E., who in February 2023 organized a brutal attack on several members of the Hungarian far-right. The victims of the attack were seriously injured.

The Albanian was previously arrested in November, but French authorities released him in the spring of 2025, refusing to extradite him to Hungary. The risk of such a decision being reversed is high, as his lawyer has raised concerns that initially extraditing him to Germany would only serve as a bridge to his transfer to Hungary, a practice that previously occurred with another member of the group, Maja T.

In Germany, the trial against the alleged gang leader, Johann Guntermann, is continuing in Dresden, while Lina E., one of the key figures of the “Hammer Gang”, has already been sentenced to several years in prison.

The case of Rexhino A. raises new questions about the role of Albanian activists in foreign radical groups and it remains to be seen whether French authorities will accept extradition to Germany, given previous legal precedents and the decision of the Federal Constitutional Court that deemed Maja T.'s transfer to Hungary illegal.
