A human trafficking ring that brought women from Latin America with deceptive promises and exploited them in a brothel in Thessaloniki was dismantled by Greek police.
Fifteen people were arrested, including three brothers who are suspected of having key roles in the network's activities.
According to information from foreign media, the victims included in the case file are four women from Latin American countries (Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela and Paraguay). These women were facing financial problems and, using false or deceptive promises regarding their working conditions and remuneration, were convinced by the network to come to work in Greece.
As revealed by the months-long police investigation, the women were forced to provide sexual services in brothels and were paid lower amounts than they were supposed to receive. If they attempted to leave, they could face rejection from members of the network, who invoked the women's alleged financial debt.
The case file, as it became known, includes five brothels where other women were also prostituted. Among those arrested are men and women, depending on the role they had in the network's activities (including drivers, brothel managers, waiters, etc.). In total, the case file also includes 20 other people who had secondary roles.
From the police investigation lasting several months, it emerged that the accused brothers had expanded their activity into illegal gambling, while information indicates that they were looking for ways to legalize their illegal profits through the purchase of real estate. During the investigation, a firearm and a combat rifle were found, among other things. The 15 arrested were taken to the Thessaloniki District Court Prosecutor's Office in the morning and charged with a number of criminal offenses.
