France has started its World Cup adventure with a victory, triumphing 3-1 over Senegal in the first match of Group I, held at the MetLife Stadium.
The first half was poor in chances, with the most dangerous moment coming in the 24th minute, when Nicholas Jackson hit Mike Menjo's post after a hard left-footed shot. Beyond this episode, the teams failed to create any other clear-cut chances and the first 45 minutes ended with the score 0-0.
France started the second half better and came close to scoring in the 53rd minute, but Michael Oliseh was stopped by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Five minutes later, France were awarded a penalty after Sadio Mane and Kylian Mbappe collided in the area. After consulting VAR, the referee decided not to award a penalty.
The score was unblocked in the 66th minute. Michael Oliseh provided a brilliant assist for Kylian Mbappe, who made no mistake in front of goal and gave France the lead.
Senegal responded immediately and Nicholas Jackson put the ball in the net two minutes later, but the goal was disallowed for offside. In the 74th minute, Desire Due came close to doubling the lead, but Mendy kept the African team's hopes alive.
The safety goal for France came in the 82nd minute. Bradley Barkola, introduced as a substitute for Osman Dembele, made the most of Adrien Rabiot's assist and scored to make it 2-0.
In added time, Ibrahim Mbaje pulled one back for Senegal, bringing the excitement back to the end of the match. However, France's response was immediate. Kylian Mbappe scored a spectacular goal from distance to seal the 3-1 victory.
With this brace, the French striker made history, becoming the all-time top scorer for the French national team, with 58 goals, one more than Olivier Giroud.
Thanks to this success, France takes the first three points and temporarily leads Group I. The next group match will take place at midnight, between Iraq and Norway.
