The civic protest that has been taking place in front of the Prime Minister's Office for 17 days has also received support from Italian MEP Ilaria Salis, who has called on the European Union to follow developments in Albania more carefully.
In a message published to the protesters, Salis said that the movement known as the "Flamingo Revolution" is setting an example that, according to her, deserves the attention of all of Europe.
" Thanks to the flamingo movement this week, Albania is showing its best side. It is showing all of Europe a model path to follow ," declared the Italian MEP.
Salis said that the protest has now gone beyond a single cause and is expressing citizens' dissatisfaction with the entire political class.
" Hundreds of thousands of people have been in the streets for weeks against the government and the opposition, both incapable of representing and defending the interests of the people ," she said.
According to the MEP, the main message of the protesters is to reject the idea that Albania and its assets can be treated as goods to be sold.
" Their message is simple and powerful: 'Albania is not for sale.' It is not for sale to the oligarchs, the speculators. It is not for sale to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. It is not for sale to all those who think that money can buy everything, land, nature, even democracy ," Salis declared.
The MEP emphasized that what is happening in Albania should not be seen solely as an environmental protest.
" This movement is not simply environmentalist. It is a battle for popular sovereignty and for the right of a people to decide their own future, without the economic interests of the ruling classes driving the agenda ," she said.
At the end of her message, Salis asked European institutions to show more attention to developments in Albania.
" For this reason, Europe should follow more carefully what is happening in Albania, because it is something important for the European Union. This is a living people, aware and capable of mobilizing against predatory capitalism, against injustice, for the common good and for freedom ," declared the Italian MEP.
Sali's message comes at a time when the protest launched to protect Zvërnec is expanding day by day, articulating opposition not only to the contested projects, but also to the government and the political class as a whole.
