A tragic event has shocked Milan, where a Local Police officer, Francesco Imprezzabile, 39, lost his life during a pursuit of a vehicle driven by an Albanian citizen.
According to Italian media, it all started on Monday evening in the suburban area of Ponte Lambro, when a rented Audi Q7 disobeyed a police order to stop at a checkpoint and sped away. There were two Albanian citizens in the vehicle.
Police officer Francesco Imprezzabile immediately followed the vehicle with his service motorcycle, supported by traffic police patrols. The pursuit continued to the territory of Peschiera Borromeo, east of Milan.
At around 9:00 p.m., for reasons that are still not fully understood, the policeman lost control of his motorcycle and crashed on Via Milano, near Linate airport. Despite the immediate intervention of emergency teams and transport to Niguarda Hospital, the 39-year-old did not survive.
On Tuesday morning, authorities found the Audi Q7 abandoned in Pioltello, about 10 kilometers from the accident site. Shortly afterwards, police identified and detained the Albanian driver, along with a fellow countryman, in the province of Monza and Brianza, during a joint operation by the Local Police of Monza and Milan.
The investigation is focusing on the dynamics of the officer's crash. Authorities are looking into several leads, including the possibility that the motorcycle made contact with the Audi during the pursuit or that the officer was intentionally hit by the fleeing vehicle. Other patrols participating in the operation were unable to see the exact moment of the accident.
The Milan prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the suspected criminal offenses of "road murder" and "dangerous escape from the police." Before formalizing the charges, investigators are awaiting official reports from the Local Police and the Traffic Police. In the meantime, an autopsy of the officer's body has been ordered.
Authorities are analyzing security camera footage and license plate reading systems in the surrounding areas to accurately reconstruct the event and determine the responsibilities of the detained individuals.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions in Italy. President Sergio Mattarella expressed "deep sadness" over the loss of the policeman, while Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other representatives of Italian institutions expressed condolences to his family and colleagues.
