3.5 tons of drugs from Latin America, Italian-Albanian cocaine cartel

A criminal network based in Lombardy, which was linked to Albanian cocaine suppliers from Latin America, was hit today.

Cocaine worth over 27 million euros arrived via container ships in Lombardy.

The Guardia di Finanza has issued arrest warrants against 28 suspects, 25 of them in prison and three under house arrest.

They belonged to an armed criminal organization made up of members of the "Ndrangheta of Lokrida", the Barbaro clan, who collaborated with Albanian criminal circles.

Searches are underway in the provinces of Milan, Pavia, Bergamo, Como, Parma, Imperia, Rome, Taranto and Reggio Calabria, with the help of money dogs and anti-drug units of the Guardia di Finanza.

The DDA investigation, carried out by the GICO (Special Operations Unit) of the Guardia di Finanza, has uncovered a triangle of agreements between members of organized crime groups in Calabria, Lombardy and Campania, aimed at facilitating the importation of large quantities of narcotics from South America.

The criminal network, using sophisticated encrypted messaging devices, exploited "direct contacts with Albanian cocaine intermediaries and suppliers from South America."

The drugs arrived by ship at the ports of Livorno, Rotterdam, Gioia Tauro and Le Havre using the so-called "robbery" technique, where the drugs are hidden inside containers used for legitimate commercial transport by sea.
