General Eric Wendt has outlined before the Senate his priorities as the US ambassador-designate to Tirana by President Donald Trump.
For anyone who has long followed the procedure for the performance of an American ambassador on the foreign affairs committee, it was almost a deja vu with some changes.
From Donald Lu, who was the first diplomat to bring the Big Fish fable, to the others, two of whom did not pass, thanks to lobbying from Albania, they have generally had the same platform. The one provided by the US State Department, which is really the one that pushed for the formation of SPAK and the justice reform.
The retired general has, however, spoken of a plus package of his priorities, introducing military commitments as well as American investments.
In terms of military engagements, the general's platform was quite clear; he confirmed the NATO Summit next year in Tirana, as well as the port of Porto Romano as a NATO military port and the launch of Corridor Eight.
Wendt spoke openly about the priority of protecting American investments ranging from energy to tourism, which seems to be not simply a logic of personal private initiatives, but a strategic interest. As was the case with TAP, which started with many problems, there were endless obstacles from Russia to Italy, but today TAP has saved Europe from the trap of the only energy source that was Russia.
In everyday logic, what we are used to, the chances are that we will have a Donald Lu 2.0, even stronger than Yuri Kim, and even with the shoulder pads of a general. Who chances are that he can talk a little, but only a little. But when he does speak, he will stick out more.
He comes at a time when SPAK is nearing the end of its mandate. Which the Europeans have lobbied hard to extend. This point will be the most interesting part of General Wendt's mission; he will ask for an extension of the mandate or the constitutional deadline. Chances are that what he will ask for may happen, because after all, this has happened in the past...
