Fatos Nano was one of the most influential people in Albania, who was not influential. He did not have a social network, he did not communicate in public at all. He gave interviews very rarely, although he was one of the most polite politicians with journalists when he was all-powerful in this country.
Today, there is no one left who has not written or said something about Fatos Nano, there are many who have felt it, but also many who knew that they would have a following, a popularity in this interactive sympathy for an "excellent funeral".
However, today there are many who wonder what legacy Nano left behind, about which all the influential and important politicians of the past 35 years speak with sympathy.
Today's Albania is a product of two faces, two ideas, two mentalities, which were centered on two faces; that of Sali Berisha and Fatos Nano.
Both of these characters were the leaders of the two parties that woke up on the day communism fell in Albania, they were the ones who divided the trenches, made the agreements, and who led and projected political power after the fall of the Enver Hoxha era.
These two characters dominated political life, controlling everything until the moment when Edi Rama appeared in Albanian politics and changed everything.
But Edi Rama, although he may have appeared to be pushing his own agenda, words, and creations, Fatos Nano introduced Albanian politics.
Who was undoubtedly the politician who opened politics to society, of course in his own way, but providing a liberal, inclusive, and peaceful model.
Fatos Nano is not the first politician to be arrested and imprisoned by the "leader of freedom" Sali Berisha after he came to power. Berisha imprisoned Ramiz Alina and the entire old communist leadership, but also many other characters from the communist leadership's entourage.
However, the imprisonment of Fatos Nano was actually Sali Berisha's biggest political mistake. As the leader of the Albanian opposition, he challenged his opponent in all aspects. Six months after Sali Berisha's victory, Nano took over almost half of the country's municipalities. Fearing a quick departure, Berisha imprisoned him for a criminal offense that does not even exist in George Orwell's novels. "Indirect corruption in favor of third parties."
A terrifying odyssey that plunged Albania into a civil conflict that erupted in 1997. Fatos Nano began his first interview from prison with a quote from the Bible: "Physician, heal yourself," said Nano, addressing Sali Berisha with a sacred metaphor, which was widely ridiculed.
But Nano, in addition to the Bible, as he said himself in an interview, also carried Duma's Count of Monte Cristo, planning his cold and complicated revenge, which he actually carried out in a brutal manner against all those who had imprisoned him first in 313 and then in Bënçë.
At first, by keeping them close and showing that he is weak, and finally, in 2021, with the bombshell interview with Fevziu where he gave Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta the final verdict. Here we are today, Fatos Nano returned to the headlines even though he had been out of power for 20 years. There is a lot of inflation about what Fatos Nano's real legacy was.
Socialists today have burst into tears and emotional statuses. But this is within politics, since Fatos Nano has been in serious condition for years, no one has been interested in his health.
